Further proof that "They" are looking towards "Us" for the next generation of cultural hits and snazzy media fads, the Disinformation DVD is a collection of four episodes of the British counterculture, reality-bending, mockumentary hosted by Richard Metzger of The Disinformation Company. The DVD also includes six hours of the Disinfo.con event. My only question is: What were "They" thinking?

The Disinfo series itself is uneven, but to be fair, it contains a little of everything for everyone (of the counterculture genre that is). Everything from extremely interesting (Grant Morrison, Paul Laffoley, Radionics) to hilarious (The Sex Life of Robots) to graphic (Extreme Pornography) to utterly ridiculous (Mr. Awesome, Rocket Man). One can sit and thoroughly enjoy one half of an episode and then sit through the second half and wonder how Metzger is even keeping a straight face. The gem of the entire DVD package is most definitely the Disinfo.con event. I'm actually disappointed that the entire event wasn't on the DVD. I can only hope for a second DVD release in the future. The Disinfo.con event contained a well captivating opener by Metzger himself, which was quickly followed by an intelligent and extremely interesting expose by Douglas Rushkoff. This was followed by the highly enjoyable and flamboyant rantings of Grant Morrison, who is truly a comic book character himself. Mark Pesce's speech seemed cut all too short though - he never really seems to gain a footing in the crowd - while Kenneth Anger and Joe Coleman seem a little out of place on stage, as if they weren't really comfortable.

To fans in the audience - and true fans of the counterculture watching at home - none of this really matters. It's enough to see your favorite cultural evangelists (like Robert Anton Wilson) up on stage spreading the word. And let's face it, if you're even contemplating buying this DVD, you're already interested enough in the contents to enjoy it thoroughly. My only real pressing complaint is that this "complete series" doesn't really seem to be complete at all. It only contains the episodes that were bought by the Sci-Fi Channel (with a few extras thrown in) and a trimmed down version of the Disinfo.con event. Maybe the future will hold more... So what were "They" thinking? We may never know. The Disinformation Series should have only made it through the underground and never into the mainstream media. This is not my opinion. This is a fact of the conservative media empire. Somehow Metzger, much to his credit, was able to push this series through. Maybe Douglas Ruskoff was right. Maybe we have won...
